Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
