Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
