The former Brazilian president detained after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
